Nova Universidade de Lisboa Masters Thesis Project: Preparation of Functionalized Porous Platforms for Transdermal Drug Delivery Advisor: Dr. Carla Portugal:

Preliminary exploration of protein-based drug delivery platforms in the form of aerogels and hydrogel microarrays.

Investigated swelling properties, permeation, mechanism of water uptake, diffusion coefficient, and structural properties.

5 / 7
Nova Universidade de Lisboa Simulated Real-World Project: Provide Initial Assessment to WHO for a New RO Plant to Sustain Population Growth in Ilha do Sal in Cape Verde Advisor: Dr. Joe Diniz da Costa:

Applied principles of membrane engineering, sustainability, and economics into a single project.

Improved competence to conceptualize open real-world projects.

Improved project management and teamwork skills, including report writing, short oral presentations, and leader of multicultural team.

Developed aptitude to prepare short projects suited for Industry, Consultants, Government Agencies, and NGO.

Undergraduate Research Assistant, North Central College Structural Studies of Transition Metal Ionic Liquids using Anomalous X-ray Scattering at the Advanced Photon Source Advisors: Dr. Nicholas Boaz and Dr. Nicholas Mauro:

Developed complex synthesis techniques working with organometallic and inorganic compounds utilizing air sensitive techniques (Schlenk line and glove box).

Accomplished successful synthesis of numerous Copper (II), Cobalt (II), and novel Zinc (II) based ionic liquids with alkylimidazole ligands with varying Carbon chain lengths and characterized with NMR and IR in less than two weeks.

Executed tedious analysis at Argonne National Lab to determine which energies to obtain the data for each sample.

Brainstormed with research group to efficiently overcome challenges experienced at Argonne, including re- making all sample holders due to error in calculations prior to experiment.

R&D Intern, Thermo Fisher ScientificxNovel Method of Protein Detection in Real Time Advisor: Dr. Kari Severson

Gathered and analyzed substantial data to develop a simplified Western blot technique to detect proteins in real time.

Designed step-by-step experiments to analyze potential materials for this technique so future employees could continue my work.

Reported findings to my advisor and other interns weekly through written reports andpresentations
